Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in the early 18th century from the noun 'episode', ultimately from Ancient Greek 'epeisodios' (coming in besides), combining 'epi-' (in addition), 'eis' (into), and 'hodos' (way or entrance). In ancient Greek tragedy, it originally referred to the dramatic dialogue inserted between choral songs.
