Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Late Latin episcopalis ('relating to a bishop'), from Latin episcopus ('bishop'), which derives from Ancient Greek episkopos ('overseer, guardian'). Interestingly, the exact same Greek root episkopos was borrowed much earlier into Old English and phonetically wore down over centuries to become the modern English word 'bishop'.
