Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the late 17th century from Ancient Greek 'epeisodion', a dramatic section inserted between two choric songs in a Greek tragedy, literally meaning 'an addition' or 'coming in besides' (from 'epi-' meaning 'in addition' and 'eisodos' meaning 'an entrance').
