Word Origin & Etymology

In its sense as the Vietnamese New Year (capitalized as Tet), it is borrowed from Vietnamese Tết, shortened from Tết Nguyên Đán (Feast of the First Morning of the First Day), derived from Sino-Vietnamese 節 (season, festival). As the letter of the Semitic abjad, it derives from Hebrew טֵית (ṭêṯ), from Phoenician.
