Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the early 16th century from Scottish Gaelic sluagh-ghairm ('army cry'), a compound of sluagh ('host, army') and gairm ('cry, shout'). Originally denoting a Scottish Highland clan's war cry, the sense broadened in the 18th and 19th centuries to political rallying cries and commercial catchphrases.
