Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the 16th century from Middle French sincérité, from Latin sinceritas ('wholeness, purity, integrity'), derived from sincerus ('clean, pure, sound'). A popular folk etymology claiming the word comes from Latin sine cera ('without wax', supposedly referring to unpatched marble statues) is historically unfounded.
