Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the mid-16th century from Middle French sincère, from Latin sincerus ('clean, pure, whole, uninjured'), probably derived from Proto-Indo-European *sem- ('one') and the root of crescere ('to grow'), meaning 'of one growth' or 'unmixed'. A popular folk etymology claiming it derives from Latin sine cera ('without wax', referring to unpatched marble statues) is historically unfounded.
