Word Origin & Etymology
Formed from the adjective 'routine' plus the adverbial suffix '-ly'. 'Routine' was borrowed in the late 17th century from French 'routine' (usual course of action), a diminutive of 'route' (way, path), ultimately from Latin 'rupta (via)' meaning 'a broken or beaten path'.
