Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Middle French pacifique and directly from Latin pacificus ('peacemaking, peaceful'), formed from pax ('peace') and the root of facere ('to make'). The Pacific Ocean was named Mar Pacífico ('Peaceful Sea') by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1520 due to the calm waters he encountered after navigating the stormy Strait of Magellan.
