Borrowed from Russian матрёшка (matryoshka), a diminutive form of the female given name Matryona, which ultimately derives from Latin matrona ('matron' or 'mother'). The first such doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by Sergey Malyutin.
