Word Origin & Etymology

In the sense of a raincoat, the word is a 19th-century shortening of 'mackintosh', named after the Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh, who patented waterproof rubberized fabric in 1823. As an informal form of address, it derives from the common Scottish and Irish patronymic surname prefix 'Mac-', meaning 'son of' in Gaelic.
