Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from French 'isabelle', from the female given name Isabel (the Spanish and Provençal form of Elizabeth). A popular apocryphal legend attributes the color's name to Isabella I of Castile or Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia, who allegedly vowed not to change her linen shift until a military siege was lifted, causing the garment to turn a dingy yellowish-brown.
