Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in 1961 as a portmanteau of 'flying' and 'rubber' for the Disney film 'The Absent-Minded Professor', based on Samuel W. Taylor's short story 'A Situation of Gravity'. The humorous sense referring to body fat is also influenced by 'blubber' and 'flab'.
