Word Origin & Etymology
Coined in late 19th-century American slang (originally recorded as a flower name, 'dozy', in eastern Ohio), likely as an alteration of 'daisy' used in the sense of something first-rate; it was later popularized and reinforced in the 1920s and 1930s by association with the luxurious Duesenberg automobile and the actress Eleonora Duse.
