Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Late Latin diametricus, from Ancient Greek diametrikos ('of a diameter'), formed from dia- ('across, through') and metron ('measure'). The figurative sense of 'completely opposite' arose from the geometric concept of two points lying at the farthest ends of a circle's diameter.
