Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Late Latin dialysis, from Ancient Greek διάλυσις (diálusis, "dissolution, separation"), derived from δια- (dia-, "apart") and λύσις (lúsis, "loosening"). The chemical and medical senses were introduced by Scottish chemist Thomas Graham in 1861.
