Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the early 17th century from Late Latin convectio ('a bringing together'), from the verb convehere, formed from com- ('together') and vehere ('to carry'). Its modern thermodynamic sense of heat transfer via fluid motion was introduced by English physicist William Prout in 1834.
