Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 15th century from Latin convalescere ('to regain health' or 'grow strong'), formed from the intensive prefix com- ('thoroughly') and valescere ('to begin to grow strong'), an inchoative derivative of valere ('to be strong' or 'be well').
