Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from French 'chauffeur' (literally 'stoker' or 'fireman'), derived from 'chauffer' ('to heat'). The term was originally applied to early automobile operators because the first self-propelled vehicles were steam-powered and required the driver to stoke a firebox.
