Word Origin & Etymology

Originated in the 16th century as a variant of the archaic word 'bought' (meaning a bend, loop, or circuit), from Middle English and related to Middle Low German 'bucht'. The sense evolved from a physical turn or circuit (such as plowing the length of a field and back) to a spell of activity or a contest.
