Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in the early 17th century from 'beef' and 'eater', originally as a colloquial term for a well-fed servant in a noble household. It became associated with the Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London because they were historically granted a generous daily ration of beef from the royal table.
