Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the mid-18th century from the Italian phrase 'al fresco', meaning 'in the fresh (air)', from 'al' (a contraction of 'a il', 'to/in the') and 'fresco' ('cool, fresh'). Ironically, in modern Italian the phrase 'stare al fresco' is colloquially used to mean 'to be in prison'.
