Any of various herbaceous perennial plants of the genus Anemone (in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae), native to north temperate and subarctic regions, characterized by deeply lobed leaves and cup-shaped, brightly colored flowers with petal-like sepals.

Word Origin & Etymology

A calque (loan translation) of the ancient Greek word 'anemōnē' (literally 'daughter of the wind'), derived from 'anemos' (wind). The name originates from the belief recorded by Roman naturalist Pliny that the flowers only opened when the wind blew, or because their delicate petals were easily blown away.
