A free-floating perennial aquatic plant (Pistia stratiotes) in the arum family (Araceae), native to tropical and subtropical freshwaters worldwide, forming rosettes of thick, ribbed, velvety green leaves resembling an open head of lettuce and bearing inconspicuous, pale whitish-green flowers enclosed within a small, hairy floral bract (spathe) at the center of the plant.
