Word Origin & Etymology
From Old English wǣrloga, meaning 'oathbreaker' or 'deceiver', a compound of wǣr ('covenant, truth, pledge') and lēogan ('to lie, deny'). In early Christian texts it referred to the Devil, and later in Scottish usage it came to denote a man in league with the Devil.
