Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from Italian and Latin vespa, meaning 'wasp'. The Italian motor scooter brand was named in 1946 by industrialist Enrico Piaggio because the vehicle's narrow waist, wide rear fender, and buzzing engine sound reminded him of a wasp.
