Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the 14th century from Old French 'venue' (an arrival or coming), the feminine past participle of 'venir' (to come), from Latin 'venire'. In Anglo-French legal usage, it referred to the neighborhood from which a jury was summoned to hear a case, before broadening in the 19th century to mean the site of any public gathering or event.
