Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in Middle English as an agent noun from the verb 'uphold' plus the suffix '-er'. Historically, in early modern Britain, 'upholder' also served as a guild trade name for an upholsterer or dealer in furniture and small wares, which eventually gave rise to the modern word 'upholsterer'.
