Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the late 18th century from Swedish 'tungsten', a compound of 'tung' (heavy) and 'sten' (stone), originally referring to the dense calcium tungstate mineral scheelite before being applied to the metal itself. Its chemical symbol, W, derives from its alternative German name, 'Wolfram'.
