Word Origin & Etymology
From Old English 'trīewþ' or 'trēowþ', meaning 'faithfulness, fidelity, or loyalty', derived from the Proto-Germanic root '*trewwō' ('faith, covenant'), which is ultimately related to the Proto-Indo-European root '*deru-' ('to be firm, solid, steadfast', also the source of the word 'tree').
