Word Origin & Etymology
In music, altered in the 19th century by English music educator Sarah Glover from the earlier solfège syllable 'si' so that each note of the scale would begin with a distinct consonant. The botanical sense is borrowed from Polynesian languages, such as Tahitian and Hawaiian 'tī' or 'kī'.
