Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in the late 1960s by combining the prefix 'super-' with 'group'; the musical sense gained widespread popularity in 1968–1969 to describe rock bands such as Cream and Blind Faith, while the geological and biological senses developed independently as higher-level classification ranks.
