Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed from Old French 'stile', from Latin 'stilus', originally meaning a pointed stake or a sharp instrument used by the Romans for writing on wax tablets, which figuratively came to mean one's manner of writing or expression. The modern spelling with a 'y' arose through false association with the Greek word 'stylos' (meaning 'pillar' or 'column').
