Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed in the mid-17th century directly from Latin 'stamen', meaning the warp of an upright loom or a thread, derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *sta- ('to stand'). Early botanists applied the term to the upright, threadlike pollen-bearing filaments inside a flower.
