Word Origin & Etymology

Formed in the 1990s from the verb "spam" plus the agentive suffix "-er." The computing sense of "spam" originated from a famous 1970 Monty Python sketch in which a restaurant menu is dominated by the canned meat product Spam, and a group of Vikings repeatedly sings the word until it drowns out all other conversation.
