Word Origin & Etymology

First recorded in the late 18th century as British slang for a cobbler or shoemaker, the word soon came to mean a person of the lower classes, then someone who vulgarly apes their social superiors, and finally (popularized by William Makepeace Thackeray's 'The Book of Snobs' in 1848) one who looks down on those considered socially or culturally inferior.
