Word Origin & Etymology
Late 15th century, modified from Middle English 'fnesen' (from Old English 'fneosan', to snort or sneeze), due to the misreading or misprinting of the obsolete initial 'fn-' cluster after the letter 'f' and the long 's' ('ſ') became visually confused.
