Word Origin & Etymology

Formed in the early 20th century from the verb 'slink' (from Old English 'slincan', meaning to creep or crawl) plus the adjective suffix '-y'. The famous coiled spring toy was invented by naval engineer Richard James in 1943 and named by his wife Betty for its smooth, sinuous motion.
