Word Origin & Etymology

Formed in English from the adjective 'skew' (from Middle English 'skewen', meaning to turn aside or slip away, via Anglo-Norman from Middle Dutch 'schouwen') combined with the noun-forming suffix '-ness'. Its specialized statistical sense was introduced by the English mathematician Karl Pearson in 1895.
