Originating in late 19th-century American underworld slang, the word originally referred to a front trouser pocket ('kick' being pickpocket slang for a pocket). Since the front side pocket is the hardest to pick and closest to the wearer, 'sidekick' evolved into a metaphor for a trusted companion who is always at one's side.
