Word Origin & Etymology
From Old English sibling ('relative, kinsman'), formed from sibb ('kinship, relationship') and the suffix -ling. After falling out of general use in Middle English, the word was revived by anthropologists and geneticists in 1903 specifically to mean a brother or sister.
