Word Origin & Etymology

Formed in the early 19th century from the verb 'ship' (from Old English 'scipian', meaning to embark or put on board a vessel) combined with the noun-forming suffix '-ment'. Although originally restricted to maritime transport, the word broadened alongside the expansion of railroads and highways to cover goods transported by any carrier.
