Word Origin & Etymology

Coined in mid-20th-century American slang as a shortened form of "schnozzle," which derives from the Yiddish word "shnoyts" (meaning "snout"). The word was widely popularized by the American vaudeville and radio comedian Jimmy Durante, who was affectionately nicknamed "The Great Schnozzola" because of his prominent nose.
