Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the early 17th century from French 'scénique' or Latin 'scaenicus', from Ancient Greek 'skēnikos' ('of or belonging to the theatrical stage'), derived from 'skēnē' ('tent, booth, stage'). The modern landscape sense developed in the 19th century as 'scene' came to mean a picturesque natural view.
