Word Origin & Etymology

From Old French romain and directly from Latin Romanus ('of Rome'), a derivative of Roma ('Rome'). The typographic sense arose in the 16th century because upright serif typefaces were modeled on ancient Roman inscriptions and Renaissance Italian humanist scripts, in contrast to slanted italic or heavy blackletter styles.
