Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed directly from Latin rex (genitive regis), meaning 'king' or 'ruler', from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₃reǵ- ('to straighten, direct, or rule'). The animal breed sense arose in 1919 in France when a rabbit breeder named a short-haired, plush-coated mutation Castorrex ('beaver king').
