Word Origin & Etymology
Borrowed in the 17th century from French rêverie ('daydream'), derived from Middle French resver ('to wander, be delirious, or dream'). Earlier in Middle English, the word meant 'wild, unrestrained revelry or joy' before shifting to its modern sense of quiet, dreamy meditation.
