Word Origin & Etymology
Formed in the 19th century from the prefix 're-' and 'vamp' (meaning the upper front part of a boot or shoe, from Anglo-French 'avanpie', literally 'fore-foot'). It originally referred to the cobbler's practice of patching up old footwear with new uppers before broadening to mean any general renovation.
