Word Origin & Etymology

Borrowed from French 'restaurant', meaning 'restoring'. Originally, in 18th-century Paris, it referred to a restorative meat broth (bouillon restaurant), deriving from the verb 'restaurer' (to restore). It later came to denote the establishment where such broths, and eventually full meals, were served.
