Word Origin & Etymology
From Old French 'remors', from Medieval Latin 'remorsus', the past participle of Latin 'remordere' ('to vex, disturb', literally 'to bite back'), formed from 're-' ('back, again') and 'mordere' ('to bite'). The term originally appeared in the Middle English phrase 'remorse of conscience', translating Medieval Latin 'remorsus conscientiae' ('the biting back of conscience').
